Dark Patterns – Balancing Business vs Design requirements

When designing to present content we are often confronted with business requirements, that can have a negative affect on the design solution itself. Design can become less user friendly or even worse – dishonest.

To fill the gap, darkpatterns.org was created in August 2010: a pattern library with the specific goal of naming and shaming deceptive user interfaces (aka “dark patterns”) and the companies that use them. Harry Brignull nice presentation gives an overview on this topic.

Definition “Dark Patterns”
“Normally when you think of “bad design”, you think of laziness or mistakes. These are known as design anti-patterns. Dark Patterns are different – they are not mistakes, they are carefully crafted with a solid understanding of human psychology, and they do not have the user’s interests in mind.”
